Description
Care & Maintenance:
- Lighting: Japanese Dwarf Pennywort thrives in both low to high lighting conditions. In high lighting, it grows densely and horizontally, creating a vibrant carpet, while in low lighting, it grows more slowly and loosely, forming a bush-like structure.
- Temperature: 72° – 82° F (22° – 28° C)
- pH: 6.0 – 7.5
- Growth Rate: Slow (but faster with CO2 supplementation)
- Potential Height: 2 – 4 inches (5 – 10 cm)
- Aquarium Placement: Place in the foreground with high lighting or in the foreground to middle with lower lighting.
- Care Level: Easy to moderate, depending on lighting and care
Growth & Trimming: This plant benefits from weekly trimming to encourage horizontal growth when used as a carpet. Trimmings can be replanted to expand the size of the mat. It doesn’t require substrate but can absorb nutrients through its roots if planted in one. It may even grow over rocks and mats, creating a beautiful, natural look in the aquarium. For faster, denser growth, CO2 supplementation can be added, but be aware that this will require more frequent trimming due to the increased growth rate.
Tissue Culture Advantage: The tissue culture form of Japanese Dwarf Pennywort is grown in a completely sterile environment, ensuring it is free from pests, snails, or algae spores. When introducing it to your aquarium, simply rinse off the nutrient gel and plant as usual. The gel will not harm your aquarium and helps ensure a smooth transition for the plant.
Supplementation: Japanese Dwarf Pennywort thrives with plant supplements like Seachem Flourish, Flourish Excel, Flourish Nitrogen, and Flourish Iron. These nutrients will promote healthy growth and help the plant reach its full potential in your tank.
