Description
Appearance
- Color: The Starlight Pleco has a dark brown to black body adorned with small white or yellowish spots, resembling stars in the night sky.
- Fins: Its dorsal and tail fins feature a distinct white seam, which contrasts beautifully with the dark body.
- Size: They typically grow up to 5-6 inches (12-15 cm) in length.
Habitat
- Origin: Native to the Rio Negro in Brazil, a blackwater river system known for its acidic, tannin-rich waters.
- Tank Setup: They thrive in a well-maintained aquarium with plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, driftwood, and plants. They prefer soft, slightly acidic water, mimicking their natural habitat.
Behavior
- Temperament: Generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive species. However, they can be territorial with their own kind, so providing ample space and hiding places is essential
Care Requirements
- Water Parameters: Prefers temperatures between 75-82°F (24-28°C), a pH of 6.0-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water.
- Tank Size: A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a single Starlight Pleco.
- Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on algae, vegetables, and high-quality sinking pellets. They may also enjoy occasional treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
